Musing on the Month

By Robert Frost 1874–1963 Robert Frost
O hushed October morning mild,
Thy leaves have ripened to the fall;
Tomorrow’s wind, if it be wild,
Should waste them all.
The crows above the forest call;
Tomorrow they may form and go.
O hushed October morning mild,
Begin the hours of this day slow.
Make the day seem to us less brief.
Hearts not averse to being beguiled,
Beguile us in the way you know.
Release one leaf at break of day;
At noon release another leaf;
One from our trees, one far away.
Retard the sun with gentle mist;
Enchant the land with amethyst.
Slow, slow!
For the grapes’ sake, if they were all,
Whose leaves already are burnt with frost,
Whose clustered fruit must else be lost--
For the grapes’ sake along the wall.

We haven't read anything by Frost yet, but this poem seemed to fit my mood today. My weekend was full of family and fall fun.....harvest is a great time of year!

  1. I've always known that the interest was a curious place; however, I am wondering why I missed this posting. I know I have not seen it because we know a Frost poem would be well remembered.

    "Retard the sun with gentle mist; Enchant the land with amethyst." that is a quote worthy of sliced bread status. I can see the veil of moisture as the light attempts to permeate through; thus, creating a mixture of lavender hues in the atmosphere.

    Amethysts have long been one of my favorite stones for jewelry and to merely investigate. I have a few raw stones in my bead storage and I will tell you; they are a beautifully marbled piece of "rock." Maybe it is the general color. I feel most comfortable with varying shades of purple around me. I once read that blue was a common color of royalty but the purples were even more treasured because of the difficulty of creating the dyes to obtain that beautiful color. Not everyone could afford to have fabrics of such strenuous technique. I've always joked that purple must be my favorite because subconsciously I know what a royal pain I really am.
